Everyone has that one perfect pair of jeans or an outfit that they keep simply because they love the way it looks on them. This is the outfit that can turn even a bad day into something bearable. Now, imagine waking up one day and finding a sudden tightness in the fitting of the outfit. While, slight weight gain or weight loss is a common occurrence, drastic changes often underline an additional factor. Add to this low-energy, anxiety, increased sensitivity to heat or cold, and you probably have a thyroid imbalance. Affecting over 42 million of the Indian population, thyroid disease is increasingly becoming a cause for concern.
Understanding the thyroid function
The thyroid gland, located at the base of your neck, releases critical hormones that aid in metabolism and other important bodily functions such as heart rate, nervous systems, weight, cholesterol function and menstrual cycles, among others. This butterfly shaped gland is an important part of the endocrine system and release two main hormones – T3 and T4 into the bloodstream for use by cells. When these hormones are produced in high or low quantities, it can lead to thyroid imbalance.
